The White Horse Inn, West Sussex
The White Horse Inn, The Street, Sutto, West Sussex RH20 1PS
Call : 01798 869191
Dating back to the 18th century, this village pub was given a new lease of life in early 2019, following a major restoration under new ownership. Settle down in one of the eight rooms, named after racehorses, which feature huge beds, handmade in Dartmoor, with deep, lavender-filled toppers.
Curtains are thick, the furniture is oak and the underfloor heating is just what you want on a cold winter’s evening. Furthermore, each room has a gun safe and there’s a shooting butler on hand if needed (there’s live shooting at Cowdray and Goodwood). The restaurant has a pared-back menu, rooted in a classic British style and championing local and seasonal produce – think ‘Cured Chalk Stream Trout, Mushroom & Tarragon’, ‘Barbary Duck Breast’ and ‘Wild Mushroom Risotto’. Alternatively, dig into a sumptuous steak, cooked up on the charcoal grill.
The Black Swan, Yorkshire
Set in one of North Yorkshire’s prettiest market towns, Helmsley, The Black Swan sits among some of the best shooting moorland in the UK. Built in the 15th century, this is a part former blacksmiths, part inn, with a 1970s bedroom annex (sympathetically done in local stone) in the pretty walled garden.
The 45 rooms come with either traditional or contemporary interiors (book one in the Garden wing). The two-Rosette restaurant serves up well-presented and imaginative dishes, using the best local ingredients such as Dry Aged Yorkshire Duck. The three private dining rooms, with roaring fires, are perfect for shooting parties. There’s a shoot coordinator and secure gun cabinets, too, plus dogs are welcome. Start the night in the Cygnet bar, which stocks more than 200 wines and champagnes.
